At My Fashion Maven we simply adore the rockabilly and pinup styles that were made popular by Betty Page, among others.

Not only are these styles, fun, sexy, and feminine, they also empower women to embrace their curves and love their bodies as they are! What’s not to love about that?

Some hallmarks of pinup and rockabilly style are blood red nails and lips, pale skin, peep toe pumps, polka dots, bows, nautical themes, feminine hairstyles with ponytails and victory rolls, and body hugging wiggle dresses. Oh, and animal print, fl orals, hair flowers and full skirts and crinolines are also hot.

Check out some of the photos from a recent photo shoot we did at Katy K’s Ranch Dressing.

Katy was nice enough to let us do the photo shoot in the dressing room at the shop and outfit our model, Cara Morris, in some of the most adorable outfits.

Steve Harman took the amazing photos, Tisha of Pureglamour By Tisha did Cara’s hot, hot makeup, and KK of Works of Art Salon and Spa did Cara’s amazing victory rolls and spiral curls.

Angela Wynne selected the outfits for the shoot. Cara did an amazing job capturing the fun, whimsy, and coquettish style that is oh, so kittenish!

If you love pinup style and you live in the Nashville area, you’re in luck! Katy K’s Ranch Dressing has some of THE cutest pinup, rockabilly, and burlesque styles. Katy carries awesome brands such as Hell Bunny and Living Dead Souls. Katy knows her pinup style!

There’s still time to stop by and snatch up something for Muddy Roots this weekend whether you are entering the Pinup Pageant or simply going to enjoy the music and festivities, Katy K’s. is THE place for all the pinup and rockabilly style.

Love, love, love, this style!

OK, so I had the opportunity to hang out at a very nice house in an undisclosed location in Middle Tennessee, to watch the making of a Hip Hop music video. Pretty cool, huh? The band is called BLACKCATFISH and they are a Nashville based, unsigned Hip Hop/Rap group. BLACKCATFISH is Slim Chance, 5’3″, and Sam Brixx.

When I arrived at the mansion, I mean house, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew the video for their song “Wonderful” was to be a party scene and they wanted it to be an authentic party. Things were very calm and although champagne was flowing, it was a very professional scene.

Upstairs, models were being primped and getting hair and makeup done.

Carly Nelson and Sheena Winiarski are both recent graduates of O’More College of Design. Both of them showed collections in the recent Eloise Fashion Show and both women won awards for their designs. Carly won two awards,The Lookbook Award and The People’s Choice Award (chosen by audience members).

Carly Nelson

Sheena won The Distinguished Designer Award for her Design Collection and Business Plan.

Sheena Winiarski (left)

I was so impressed and inspired by their designs that I wanted to chat with them to find out more about what went into the creation of their collections.

Carly Nelson

Carly blew me away with her color infused collection“Suspiria”. Each look in her collection was completely monochromatic from head to toe which created a dramatic visual impact on stage.

In addition to the color element, the details, fit, and overall style of her garments was really impressive for a design student.

Carly is very mature, self-assured, and a bit shy. Perhaps the fact that she decided to attend design school at 28 instead of jumping right in after high school has something to do with that. Although Carly has not always known she wanted to be a fashion designer, she has always been artistic and is a vintage clothing lover and collector.

I asked Carly about the process of designing a collection for the O’More Fashion Show. According to Carly, the process starts with design sketches and design board, followed by presentations and finally, the actual creation of the garments. Each student is responsible for funding their own project and Carly estimates that the average cost is between $300 and $800.

Carly’s collection was inspired by the 1977 Italian horror cult classic, Suspiria as well as American Psycho. She pointed out specific details which are nods to each film. For example, the dramatic long red coat was inspired by a scene in Suspiria where one of the characters falls through glass. The triangular shape of this scene is what Carly loosely replicated in her design.

Another movie scene inspired ensemble was her pale blue skirt outfit with plastic jacket. She took her inspiration from a scene in American Psycho where the very polished, well dressed character used a shower curtain to protect his precious suit while committing acts of violence.

This notion that appearances create facades to cover what lies beneath is one that Carly expresses through her designs. Another example of this is evident in both the grey and peach dresses in her collection.

Both are pretty and feminine with a sinister secret. They have miniature knives and axes embedded in the fabric! Carly made the tiny axes and knives out of clay and they are hidden by the fabric so that only their outline is visible. These macabre details are only noticeable upon close inspection, much like our own personality flaws. These details and psychological film references add to the depth and intelligence of Carly’s work.

I will be interested to see what Carly does next. Now that she has graduated from O’More, she is looking toward the future with optimistic realism. She realizes that she has a lot to learn and would like to find an opportunity across the pond. I have no doubt that whatever Carly does, she will be a huge success!
Sheena Winiarski
Sheena is a very articulate, confident, professional young lady. She was wearing one of her designs when we met and it looked fabulous! The skirt pictured below with a black top and super cool strappy black heels gave the outfit a more edgy look.

Sheena is very friendly and easy to talk to. So, it’s not surprising that she was a Nanny before she decided to pursue Fashion Design. Sheena is very self-motivated but gives a great deal of credit to her professor, Kevin Crouch for her success at O’More. She understands how fortunate she was to work with someone who nurtured her talent while also giving her room to grow as an artist.

Sheena transferred into O’More as a Junior and accellerated her program so that she could graduate early. She worked hard to meet that goal and as a result, she had two collections in the Eloise Fashion Show. She had a Men’s collection in the Juniors Category and a Women’s collection in the Senior Category. That alone speaks volumes to Sheena’s work ethic and determination.

Her work as an Intern with Manuel proved helpful in designing the men’s line; especially when the men’s shirts. Her men’s collection consisted of three looks. One was a rock-n-roll cowboy, with a funky, black leather fringe belt.

She brought the belt to our meeting so I was able to see it up close. The leather was so soft and the belt was very well made. The great thing about it is that it is so versatile. I could see a woman wearing it just as easily as a man. Sheena also informed me that she has been wearing it as a necklace which is also very cool. Hmm…

Black Fringe Belt

The other two looks had a vintage military vibe.

Her women’s line was softer and less tailored. She chose a very neutral palette of blacks and creams which gave her collection excellent visual contrast.

A short, black, lacy dress was sexy and very fitted.

The one tailored item in her women’s collection was a cream colored jacket with black stripes. I loved the silhouette of the jacket and the ruffled collar and longer back.

This jacket is even more stunning in person! She lined the jacket with black lace which added a feminine touch.

Sheena indicated that she enjoyed working on the men’s collection best and that she would like to focus on menswear in the future. She is open to opportunities that will allow her to learn and grow as a designer. Wherever she lands, they will be lucky to have her!

Kudos to O’More and Kevin Crouch! They are certainly doing something right!

Before I knew who Phillip was, I knew about Doll House Agency. I began seeing their name quite a bit prior to Nashville Fashion Week and I met Phillip shortly after. I was impressed with the Wine Wednesday event that Doll House hosted at Wear It Out Manuel during Fashion Week and took a liking to Phillip right away.

Since that time, Doll House has hosted many other in-store boutique events and countless photo shoots.

Phillip Johnson, the creative force behind Doll House Agency, is certainly a man on the move.

Phillip Johnson

I recently sat down with him to find out more about his background and plans for the future. I was surprised to learn that Phillip sort of fell into the fashion business. In 2006, he went to New York to see the play “The Color Purple”. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect since it just happened to be Fashion Week. Intrigued, Phillip managed to get on the guest list for all of the Fashion Shows and V.I.P. Events and from that point on, he was hooked. Manuel was showing that year and that made quite an impression on Phillip.

Two short months later, he traveled to Sydney, Australia for their Fashion Week. Phillip soaked up as much knowledge as he could and made valuable connections. Upon his return to Nashville, he wrote a letter to Manuel requesting an opportunity to intern with the legendary designer. As fate would have it, he was granted the opportunity and worked at the house of Manuel for about 2 1/2 years.

Another serendipitous meeting was with Nashville designer, Nina D. Phillip met Nina at a Benefit Show, made a connection and began styling Fashion Shows for her. This experience helped establish Phillip as a go-to-stylist in Nashville. He later started managing Sesean Bridges, model and cousin of Ludacris.

From there, things just evolved and in 2009, Phillip organized his own model calls and photo shoots. Before he knew it, he had signed 30 models and Doll House Agency was born. Phillip fondly remembers April Jewell as being the first face of Doll House.

Fast forward two years and Doll House is going strong. Phillip definitely knows the look he is after and has a clear vision for his future. So, what’s next? Well, Phillip is certainly not stopping with photo shoots and casting calls. He’s currently in the process of launching a menswear clothing line, King Phillip. AND as if that weren’t enough, he also has his sights on an upscale couture women’s gown collection, Queen Victoria. Oh yeah, and he is the in-house-stylist for T.I.M. Entertainment, and Operations Manager for Carlos Banolo. That’s a lot of hats to be wearing, but Phillip manages to take it all in stride. I bet you’re wondering what his secret is. Me too! I guess I will have to save that question for our next conversation.

FASHION + MUSIC = Naked Without Us

Naked Without US kicked off the first of four shows on Wednesday, May 11th at The Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville . The newly renovated Reverb Room upstairs was hopping as patrons checked out the boutiques and vendors while waiting for the bands to start.

It was a super hot evening, but no worries, there were plenty of drink specials from Firefly Vodka to cool us off.

Eco-friendly fashions were well represented with Revived Vinyl being on of my favorites. As the name suggests, Revived Vinyl finds new uses for old vinyl records such as wearable art. Another Eco-fashion item was the T-shirt necklaces I have been seeing around town by Katie Lynne Vance You can’t miss these chunky, funky, necklaces. They are definitely different. And what a great way to make something old NEW again! Accountant turned jeweler, Jodie Vieira of JoMarie Jewelry had gorgeously chic and elegant handmade jewelry to oooh and aah over! Loved it!

I missed the first band which was The Future and I head they were great! Anyway, I got there just in time to see the very stylish Vinyl Pinups.

Singer, Khara Lord-Aerts and Guitarist, Brennan Aerts were fun to watch and listen to as models walked the mini-runway in Mohawk and Love duds.

I especially loved the all black T-shirt and shorts paired with thigh high tube socks…so cute! I love that this line is made by hairdressers and a percentage of their proceeds go to the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation.

Next up was the very upbeat and Jason Mrazish band HeyHiHello. Models strutted across the stage and down the runway wearing cool dresses by Jenny Vicious of Vicious Threads.

Jenny’s collection was very rock-n-roll inspired vintage re-imagined. She uses very unique fabrics and prints like brocade and animal print that I am guessing she reconstructs and gives her own twist. I loved the looks and the models really seemed to light up in her designs.

The next band and last one I saw was Leslie and let me tell you, these guys totally rocked!

Lovers-&-Fighters Clothing Co was the clothing line paired with them which I thought was appropriate since they, well, ROCK! VERY cool T-shirts, especially the Peaceful Guns design!

I left shortly after Leslie, so I missed Yumi and The System if they played. I really wanted to see her too!

This year I started taking my daughter to preschool two days per week. As I would walk her to her class, I couldn’t help but notice a gentleman walking his son to school with a seeing eye dog. Amazed, I just had to meet this family. Finally, I had the opportunity to meet the father, Scott, his wife Christina, and his son Collin. To my surprise, not only was the father blind, but so was his wife. Their son is the cutest, sweetest little boy I’ve ever met. As we became friends, we would chat at school as our kids played together. It was so refreshing to hang out with such down to earth people! I would mainly see Scott, because his wife works full time. In fact, he is the stay at home dad; a real Mr. Mom.

Sea World Visit

Of course we all know that behind every great man, there is an amazing woman, right? Well, that woman is Scott’s wife, Christina. Here is her amazing story.

Christina Katherine Panczak, was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and grew up in Jupiter, FL. I suppose you could say that she is one of the few natives left in this state and county for that matter. She explains that her childhood was a wonderful one, although not without some unique challenges along the way.

She was born with an eye condition known as Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. This is a condition where the optic nerve does not develop properly. She was officially diagnosed with this condition when she was a mere five months old. Her parents made a conscious decision early on that they would raise her no differently than any other child. Their goal was to guide her to become a self sufficient, independent, successful woman.

Growing up, Christina had two younger brothers who watched out for her. She played ball with them, rode her bike, and participated in all of the various activities other kids were involved in. Her parents even made sure that she learned to water ski and snow ski. She still enjoys these activities today along with marathon running and sky diving!

Christina attended regular school, but was mainstreamed during this time to enable her to learn the necessary adaptive equipment and skills needed to be successful. She learned to type, read large print as well as Braille, and received rehab teaching to enable her to function in the home. Christina was expected to participate in household chores and do her school work just like her brothers. Apparently, her parents efforts to raise a confident and independent woman were successful.

Here is Christina’s amazing story in her own words. ” I graduated from William T. Dwyer High School with a regular diploma. I went on to Palm Beach Community College where I earned my AA in Psychology. I later went on to Florida Atlantic University where I earned my Bachelors degree in Social Psychology. Finally, I obtained my Graduate degree from FAU as well. I received my Masters in Education in Counselor Education with a specialization in Rehab Counseling. Throughout my college career, I received services from the Offices for Students with Disabilities at both PBCC and FAU. I was able to receive my exams in an alternative format, take extra time for exams, and tape my lectures. I also wrote my papers with the help of software known as JAWS which stands for Job Access with Speech. I still rely on this software today in my job as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. I graduated with my Masters degree in May, 2005 with my dog guide Joanie by my side wearing her own cap and gown. I obtained a job with the Florida Division of Blind Services in August of that same year and this is where I remain employed today. The Division played a major role in which I have become today as well. In fact, they provided me early interventive services from the time of my diagnosis, guided me through my childhood and teenage years, and assisted me with college. Therefore, I am honored to give back to an agency that has given so much to me. That brings me to the present.

I married my husband Scott in May of 2004. We have been happily married now for 7 years. Interestingly enough, my husband is also blind and has a dog guide as well. The two dogs were best friends, as are my husband and I. Our family expanded in 2007 to include our son, Collin James who is fully sighted. I do not parent any differently than any sighted parent. I believe that you do not need to see to love. I am sure that raising a sighted child will present some challenges, but parenting is a challenge in and of itself. I recently faced one of those many challenges that parents, sighted or not must invariably face. On February 8thof this year, I lost my Seeing Eye dog Joanie. I was faced with the difficult challenge of explaining to my son that Joanie went to Heaven to live with God. This was a difficult time for our family and me, but her loving memory and her spirit will be with us always. On a happier note, I am blessed to have a son who already at such a young age understands that his parents do things a little bit different. Collin, who will be 4 in July, understands that his mom and Dad’s eyes are broken. Collin, Scott and I enjoy family activities such as going to the pool, going to the park, and going on family trips. In fact, we recently went to Sea World for a fun family trip. It was the first time we all went as a family together without the aid of family or friends. With careful planning, we took the train, obtained a hotel and went to Sea World. Collin was a trooper. Collin got to decide where he wanted to go and what he wanted to see. The trip was a big hit and so was Nemo, the Seeing Eye dog.

I truly believe, however, that it takes a village to raise a child. I’m fortunate enough to live close by to my parents and brothers who are a major part of my life and the life of Collin. The support of my husband and all of my family has been vital. I value and appreciate my family and I would not be where I am today without their love and support. I also value my education. Education is something that nobody can take from you, so I continue to educate myself. Finally, I plan to pass down my values of family, Faith, and education to my son.

To conclude, even though I was born with a visual disability, I have not let this condition hinder me in achieving my goals. My family and the Florida Division of Blind Services have also provided me with the tools I needed to become the successful individual I am currently. Staying active physically, educating myself, spending time with family, and serving my clients are all important to me. I have had the wonderful pleasure of watching my beautiful son blossom into a fine young man. My hope for him in the future is that he keeps his faith, continues to learn and grow as a person, and that he remains true to himself. I am truly honored to be a successful wife and working mother”, Christina writes.

By the way, did I mention that she is training for the Walt Disney World Marathon next year? It is an honor to call the Smith family my friends. I learn something from them everytime I am around them. I have also learned to take the time everyday to be thankful of what I am blessed with and also to know I can do anything I put my mind to. Thank you Christina! You are truly a woman who inspires me!

When Delaunay launched Atelier Simultané in 1920s Paris, she incorporated the theory into fashion and fabric design and continued her work while designing for Dutch department store Metz & Company. This collection includes paintings, fabric swatches, garments and photographs

K.K. (Center)

I met K.K. at one of the boutique events at Wear It Out Manuel during Nashville Fashion Week.

KK Working Her Magic

I was drawn to her easy-going, fun, personality and loved the way she styled the models’ hair for the Wine Wednesday event.

Hair by K.K.

K.K.’s passion for hair and fashion were evident at a very young age. She loved to go to her Aunt’s Salon and watch her work for hours. Her love of fashion and hairstyling blossomed into a desire to become a well-known fashion designer or hairstylist.

In 2005, she decided to pursue her dream by working at Perfect Blend Salon in Nashville. Shortly thereafter, K.K. was invited by her cousin, who also happened to be a model, to accompany her on photo shoots as her personal hair and wardrobe stylist. Since this satisfied both of her passions, she was happy to oblige! The two worked successfully as a team doing photo shoots in Nashville and Atlanta for quite some time.

Since then, K.K. has styled hair for magazines such as Hope Today and Concrete Magazine. She has also styled for numerous fashion shows such as Justine Sylvie, Nina D., Charles Lord, and Alain Patterson Couture. Most recently, K.K. was the chosen stylist for Nashville Fashion Week Boutique Events at Wear It Out Manuel www.wearitoutmanuel.com, Bullets n Mullets http://bulletsmullets.com, and Studio 615 http://www.studio615boutiques.com.

In October of 2010, she opened Works of Art Salon where she has been steadily building her client base. Her main focus is on providing V.I.P. Services and giving her clients a one-of-a-kind experience. K.K. even offers in-home services for ultimate convenience for the woman on the go!

Modern Updo by K.K.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting K.K. at her Salon and getting the V.I.P. Treatment for a special event. I was offered a glass of wine and treated to an incredible shampoo and scalp massage. K.K. really does know how to make her clients feel special. She created an amazing up-do for me that really blew me away!

My Elegant French Twist by K.K.

I was so impressed, I told all my friends about her and scheduled my next appointment. Sure, you can go ANYWHERE to get your hair done. But, if you want to be treated like a V.I.P. by one of the most talented, genuine people in Nashville, go see K.K.!

Hair Art by K.K.
